Everything You Need to Know About How to Fix a Sagging Double Gate

Many homeowners choose to have gates around their homes for security, safety, and even aesthetics. Great for homes with kids and pets, gates come in a wide variety of forms including entry gates, courtyard gates, driveway gates, and more. Given that gates are outside and exposed to the elements, it only makes sense that they will start to show signs of wear and tear over time. It’s common for gates, especially double gates, to start to sag but it’s extremely important to fix sagging gates as soon as you notice it. Maintain the integrity of the gates for security, safety, and appearance purposes by learning how to fix a sagging double gate. 

Tools Required for Fixing Sagging Gates

The first thing you need to do to fix a sagging double gate is assemble the necessary tools. These include a lever, a tape measure, a pencil, a circular saw, two-by-four lumber, a power drill with a screw tip, and a set of three-inch deck screws. You should be able to find anything you don’t already own at a local hardware store. 

Identify the Gate Issue

Figuring out exactly what’s wrong with your gate will determine how you proceed with fixing it. TO determine the root cause of the sagging double gate, check the gate post of each side of the double gate and inspect the plumb of each gate. Check for signs of damage on the post. If it is solid and plumb, the issue will probably be on one or both of these gates.

Raise the Gate to Fix the Sagging

Now is when you can really start to fix the sagging gate. Close both sides of the gate before sliding a two-by-four lumber under the outer edge of the gates to use as a lever. Lift it up, using it as a lever to raise the end of the gate. Place the lever on top of the cross-member of the gate and raise it until its level. Raise the lever even further until it is about one inch above the level point. Then slide a solid object below the raised section of the lever to secure it in place. Do the same for the other side of the double gate.

Attach the Brace to Cross Members

Using the circular saw, cut the corners off the board before positioning the brace over the cross-members. Attach the brace to the cross-members with the power drill and a pair of screws, securing the brace with the top, bottom, and middle cross-members. Repeat this for the second gate.

Testing

Remove the levers from beneath the gates and open and close both sides of the double gates to check the positioning of the gate.
