Buying Guide
- Gate Weight: Match hinge load rating to the weight of your gate. A heavy wood gate (200+ lbs) needs a minimum of two heavy-duty strap or weld-on hinges rated to support the full weight plus swing load.
- Post Type: J-bolt hinges are designed for round posts and pipes. Strap and T-hinges mount flat to square posts or gate frames. Weld-on hinges are for metal post or metal gate fabrication.
- Material & Finish: Galvanized or powder-coated black hardware is the standard for outdoor agricultural use. Stainless steel is available for coastal environments.
- Self-Closing: If your gate needs to close automatically, use adjustable spring hinges or a gate closer. Adjustable tension allows you to tune closing speed.
- Gate Sag: Heavy gates sag over time. Use hinges with anti-sag built in, or plan for a third hinge at the center on gates over 6 feet wide.

FAQs
Heavy wood farm gates typically require two or three heavy-duty strap hinges or weld-on hinges rated for the full weight of the gate. For a gate 4–6 feet wide and 100 200 lbs, use at minimum two heavy-duty strap hinges. For gates wider than 6 feet or heavier than 200 lbs, add a third hinge or upgrade to industrial weld-on hinges.
A J-bolt hinge (also called a gate hanger) wraps around a round post or pipe rather than bolting to a flat surface. They are the standard choice for farm gates mounted to round steel posts or pipe fencing. No welding required — the J-bolt tightens around the post with a nut.
Gate sag is caused by insufficient hinge support. Solutions include: adding a third hinge at center, upgrading to heavier-duty hinges, using a turnbuckle or anti-sag kit, and ensuring the gate post is set at least 36" deep in concrete.
